There is such a variety in weddings today that it is often hard, as a guest, to decide what to wear in order to be both tasteful and appropriate. You don’t want to embarrass yourself or the bride/groom who invited you, but sometimes it is tough to decide what is the most “correct” attire for that person’s special day.
Here are some general tips for what to wear for any wedding occasion. So far, we’ve looked at morning weddings, daytime weddings, and non-formal evening weddings. Now we turn to formal evening weddings.
You will probably be invited to several evening weddings during your lifetime, because of the ambiance of sunset, and the party atmosphere of nighttime (great for receptions). If the invitation specifies “black-tie” or “formal dress,” it’s time to break out the tuxes and gowns. If the invitation says “black-tie optional,” that gives you a little more leeway.
For ladies:
1. A long gown is appropriate. This is a great time for beading and fancy materials. Typically, women will be wearing long dresses, although if you can find a formal shorter gown, then by all means, go for it.
2. Heels, not flats! End of story.
3. Black is an appropriate to wear for “black-tie.” A black gown is classy and pretty!
For gentlemen:
1. Either a black suit or a tuxedo is necessary for this event. If you don’t want to wear a tuxedo, then go as dark and formal as possible for your suit. If it’s not “black-tie optional,” then probably go for a tuxedo so you don’t stand out (in a bad way).
2. Dress shoes!
3. A colorful tie is not the way to go for a black tie affair (thus the name, black tie). While you don’t have to have a solid black ensemble, bright yellow or orange isn’t something you should go for.
