There is such a variety in weddings today that it is often hard, as a guest, to decide what to wear in order to be both tasteful and appropriate. You don’t want to embarrass yourself or the bride/groom who invited you, but sometimes it is tough to decide what is the most “correct” attire for that person’s special day.
Here are some general tips for what to wear for any wedding occasion. We first examined morning weddings. Then we turned to daytime weddings. Now let’s look at evening weddings–the non-formal kind first.
If there isn’t a type of dress indicated on the invitation (or the bride/groom doesn’t tell you what type of dress to wear), it’s probably safe to assume it’s not a black-tie event. While that means you can leave the tails and sequins at home, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to wear a jean skirt or flat sandals.
For ladies…
1. Consider a long gown. You don’t want to distract from the bride, so anything too plunging (in the front or back) might be considered tactless. Think elegant. (A cocktail dress is equally classy–mid length is fine, too!)
2. Darker colors are appropriate. For an evening wedding, you don’t want to show up in screaming yellow! You also want to avoid jersey or cottons and go for nicer materials.
3. If you hate dresses, a very nice suit would be appropriate.
4. Heels would be preferable if you can wear them!
For gentlemen…
1. Suits are appropriate and would look nicer than a sports coat/slacks. It does not have to be black, however, since it’s not a black tie event. Feel free to wear any darker color, along with a tie and any color shirt.
2. Dress shoes are a must!
